Understanding members of the UNT community is fundamental to the mission of the Division of Student Development in delivering exemplary programs and services to address the needs of a diverse student body as well as collaborate effectively across and beyond campus. The Office of Planning and Assessment partners with Institutional Research and Effectiveness and Division departments to gain insight into the characteristics, experiences and perceptions of various campus populations using a wide range of instruments and data collection techniques. A description of each instrument and a sample copy can be found at the links below. Presentations and reports detailing results of recent administrations of these instruments can be found at the links to the left. For additional data on UNT students, faculty and staff please see the Factbooks, Fact Sheets and Fact Finders (pdf) available on the Institutional Research and Effectiveness Office website which also maintains archives on data from previous years.
CIRP Freshman Survey
The Cooperative Institutional Research Program's Freshman Survey is a questionnaire completed by incoming freshmen prior to their first matriculating semester at the university. It is designed to present a comprehensive profile of the incoming class by surveying the following types of characteristics, behaviors and attitudes:
National results are published annually in "The American Freshman" and document the changing character of entering college students. Participating universities may obtain specific profiles of their entering class that may be organized along several parameters including first time in college students, ethnicity, gender and others as well as comparison reports to selected institutional peer groups.
University of North Texas participates in the CIRP Freshman Survey every three years by administering the questionnaire to new students during freshman orientation sessions. The latest available data profiles the entering 2005 freshman cohort. The next administration of the CIRP Freshman Survey is planned for Fall 2008 entering students. The National Survey of Student Engagement
(adapted from The National Survey of Student Engagement website)
The National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) questions undergraduates about the range of their educational experiences. Research indicates high-quality undergraduate student outcomes are intimately linked to their participation in specific types of classroom and out-of-class activities as well as specific faculty, staff and peer interactions. The level of student engagement influences the quality of student learning and the broader educational experience.
The NSSE gathers data on the following types of elements:
UNT's office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness administered the NSSE in 2005 and 2007. A summary of the results of several NSSE indicators can be found in the Who are our students? (Professionals, 2008) presentation.
More information about the NSSE as well as findings on national NSSE data can be found at the following sites:
The Noel-Levitz Student Satisfaction Inventory
The Noel-Levitz Student Satisfaction Inventory allows institutions to determine how satisfied students are with the programs provided and campus environment, considering the perceived relative importance of each factor. UNT's office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness last administered the Noel-Levitz Student Satisfaction Inventory in October of 2007. Results from some of these indicators are included in the presentations available at the "Who are our students" page.
